Being an OWL is Priceless
Jan Beiting

I belong to several professional organizations for writers and communicators. Although I rarely take advantage of their member benefits, I dutifully pay my annual dues, year after year, partly because it just seems that I “ought” to. I value what having the organization listed on my CV says about me, and that is reason enough to belong.

OWL is a little different. It’s an organization I’m engaged in and passionate about. It’s been a great way to learn at the feet of some of the great thinkers in our field, sharpen my business skills, stay current, and have fun at the same time.

I think a lot of people join OWL when they come to an event at ASCRS or AAO. But it’s worth maintaining your membership whether you sip a cocktail there or not. In fact, at a mere $100 to $250 a year, OWL membership is a pretty good value even if you never go to one of the big events.

After all, how many organizations give you the chance to put the word “leader” on your résumé? That’s priceless.

Member Profile: Julie Speed

Little did Julie Speed know that when she was earning her MBA at Texas Christian University, she’d soon be beginning a rewarding tenure in ophthalmology.

Julie had worked as a marketing intern at Alcon while she worked on her degree. When she graduated, Alcon offered her a job as a pharmaceutical sales representative. Twelve years and five job titles later, she is now Alcon’s U.S. director of marketing in the surgical division.

Julie has had a variety of unique experiences at Alcon, and held positions in market research, international glaucoma brand management, and executive team strategy.

“My tenure here at Alcon is due to the range of development opportunities that exist to keep moving and gain truly different experiences," Julie says. "Alcon has been good (and getting better) about taking people out of their comfort zone and stretching them in new assignments."

Call for Nominations: OWL's First Visionary Woman Award

OWL members are invited to nominate an outstanding ophthalmic woman leader for the inaugural Visionary Woman Award. The online nomination process opens today and will continue through March 7.

OWL's Visionary Woman Award honors a woman who has contributed significantly to helping women advance in eye care. The award will be presented at OWL's April 23 signature Monday evening
reception held in conjunction with the ASCRS annual meeting in Chicago.

Any woman in any position within eye care is eligible for the award. Nominees should have demonstrated leadership in helping women to advance in eye care - mentoring/sponsoring promising women, advocating for diversity, or advancing herself as a "trailblazer," for example. Each OWL member with a current (paid) membership during the nomination period may nominate one woman for the award.

All nomination submissions will be considered and narrowed down by OWL's Recognition Committee.OWL members will then be invited to vote for one of three finalists. The award winner will be announced prior to the ASCRS event.
