Greetings to all! I hope this finds you all well as the summer winds down and we all gear up for the fall and back-to-school season. For this issue we wanted to focus on leadership, as -- obviously! -- it is a key part of the OWL mission. I thought I might include a really inspiring quote on leadership and so -- again, obviously! -- I did a Google search. There was no end to quotes on leadership, but what struck me was that so few -- barely any, really -- were quotes by women. There were a few scattered here and there from courageous women like Margaret Mead and Eleanor Roosevelt, but the vast majority were not only from men but primarily from the military, sports figures, politicians, philosophers and business management gurus. Let’s ask ourselves why this is so, and, more importantly, what we can do about it! I’m excited to report that OWL is about to embark on a new course, one more focused on and dedicated to furthering women’s leadership skills and career advancement. We want to help women expand in leadership roles, now more than ever. We’re looking forward to providing more opportunities to give you new ways to connect, learn, and lead. I hope you’ll plan to join us at our signature Monday night event at the AAO Meeting in Chicago in October. Be watching for more details! Wishing you the best, Pamela
Going to be in Paris for ESCRS? Join up with fellow OWL members on Mon., Sept. 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the lobby bar of Le Meridien Etoile across from Le Palais des Congres for a casual "happy hour" event.
RSVP.
Women leaders: Blazing a trail so others may lead, too
In support of OWL’s mission of offering professional development, providing networking opportunities, and promoting personal growth for women in ophthalmology, this month we take a look at some of the many “trailblazing” women in ophthalmology.
In this article, OWL members from various walks of leadership within ophthalmology—in private practice, academics, and in the industry—impart their wisdom. They begin with a look at some of the challenges that they have encountered as women in ophthalmology and share a few stories along the way. Penny A. Asbell, MD, FACS, MBA, says she was surprised to learn that the glass ceiling still is there and “really made of cement!” Read more.
Save the Date for AAO
Mark your calendar for OWL's signature Monday evening event at AAO -- Mon., Oct. 18 from 5 to 7 pm.
And don't miss the OWL Lounge -- in McCormick Place S400B -- from Sat. to Tues. of AAO.
Watch the OWL website for more details!
Woman to Woman: Wisdom from Two Women Leaders
The previous Woman to Woman column explored “Leadership Leaps,” describing three ways women can enhance their leadership skills. This column shares the wisdom of two accomplished women who are leaders in their respective professional fields. Their experiences, backgrounds, and current contexts differ, but through individual interviews, they have shared their insights about their leadership journeys. Marguerite McDonald, MD, is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, an adjunct clinical professor of ophthalmology at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, and a cornea/refractive specialist with Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island, Lynbrook, NY. Camille Samuels, MBA, is a managing director of Versant Ventures, where she specializes in early-stage biotechnology investing.

What I’m Reading: “The Leadership Pill: The Missing Ingredient in Motivating People Today,” by Ken Blanchard and Marc Muchnick I found this book to be [an] easy read with a great message: Tune into what people really want and you will create the motivated dream team.
The book introduces us to a miracle pill, “the leadership pill,” which, when swallowed by even the worst manager, [enabled him to show] outstanding improvement with leadership and team spirit instantaneously.
